Thanks for your comments, first of all it's worth pointing out that the existing bridge is certainly part of Shoreham's heritage but it has been around since the 1920's and is in desperate need of maintenance. In it's current state it is unsuitable for cyclists, unpleasent in poor weather and pretty much inaccesible to those with poor mobility/in wheel chairs etc. The scheme is designed to keep the existing link that the bridge provides whilst also overcoming it's problems.
The redevelopment of the Shoreham Footbridge is intended to provided a safe, convenient and traffic free route for walkers and cyclists. It would mean that they would be able to use the bridge without battling with traffic on the road and would be a facility that provides a safer environment (especially for more vulnerable users) than a road bridge. The bridge will also be directly linked up to a number of good quality links, crossing and routes throughout the town that will make walking and cycling the most convenient and safe way to get around.
Whilst the road bridge may well have kerbs either side, it is unlikely to be designed to cater specifically for the needs of walkers and cyclists. For more details on this proposed facility your best contact would be the local authority.

Is nobody concerned of the proposed plans to make a new bridge used for vehicular access also, so, you've now got a minimum of two lanes, sidewalks eitherside, and thats before any decision is made to make the bridge suitable for H/LGV's for the proposed development of the harbour.
The bridge is bit of shorehams heritage! A modern bridge just wouldn't look right!
Save the bridge!
