Case studies

Leighton Buzzard, The Grand Union Canal and it's new lease of life with a lot less mud

Grand Union canal From Bletchley to Leighton Buzzard

Length: 6 miles

Type: Canal towpath

National Cycle Network route number 6

What does the local community think?

"Our house backs onto the canal and over the years we have often taken walks to the local pub - it has always been a favourite with our visitors. However the drawback has always been the MUD. Now things are so different. I cycle along the path to work and today cycled a few miles in the glorious sunshine. It was so good to see walkers and cyclists enjoying the countryside. Thank you and I look forward to the day we have here what you have in Bristol - my home town! "

Hilary Hastings, Leighton Buzzard

"Just wanted to say how much we enjoy the addition to Route 6, transforming the canal towpath from Leighton Buzzard to Milton Keynes into a brilliant cycle path. Not only is it a fabulous place for us to cycle with our two small children, it also provides a superb route for us to take into Leighton Buzzard for errands and work.

Yesterday, instead of a tedious drive into town, I enjoyed a wonderful cycle ride through a magical frosty landscape when I certainly wouldn't have taken the road in the same conditions.

The cycle path also recently enabled six families from our village to undertake a 45-mile cycle/camping weekend - which most of the families would never have done without a traffic-free cycle path. Thanks a million!"

Sue Coomber, Milton Keynes
