Case studies

Stoke-on-Trent, resurfacing a track results in increased usage

The route in Ford Green used to be a rough un-surfaced track, in 2004 this was resurfaced, extending it to schools in the local area and linking it to the NCN.

What does the local community think?

The additional use highlighted by the statistics below shows how the local community benefited, they wouldn't be using the route unless it made a difference to their lives:

• Between 2002 - 2005 The number of commuting trips increased by 48%

• There was a 175% increase in those ‘choosing’ not to use a car during the same period

• Total usage increased by 91% between 2002 and 2005

• The number of women using the route increased by 117%

• 4,000 users using the route in 2005 were registered as disabled, compared to 1,000 in 2002
