London, a safer link is built to the Park Royal trading estate

Work began to improve access to the park Royal Trading Estate during 2003 – 2004 with the aim of encouraging more cycling on the towpath which previously was only used by pedestrians, with cyclists having to use the busy roads for access to the estate. The surface of the towpath was improved, better lighting was installed, more access points were opened up and cycle parking facilities at various destinations were improved.

What does the local community think?

The additional use highlighted by the statistics below shows how the local community benefited, they wouldn't be using the route unless it made a difference to their lives:

• Increases in cycling trips ranging from 151% in Abbey Road, 59% at Water Road and to 49% in Scrubs Lane

• An 80% increase in the number of women cycling to work

• An increase in pedestrian use ranging from 15% to 43% at the 3 survey points

• An increase in new and returning cyclists from 5% in 2002 to 21% of cyclists in 2004
