Treforest Connect2

Treforest Connect2 will overcome the barriers to walking and cycling that are typical of the South Wales Valleys where trunk-roads, railway lines, rivers and housing compete for space in the narrow valley floors. In particular, the Treforest scheme will provide links over the busy A470, the River Taff, and the north-south railway line.

Treforest Connect2 will create an attractive traffic-free spine though the centre of the town that will link Treforest with Pontypridd in the north and Church Village in the south. This route along the former Taff Vale Railway, will benefit from the close proximity of the beautiful River Taff and its rich industrial past. It will also provide the first safe and DDA compliant crossing of the live rail-line in Treforest. The Connect2 scheme will also help to link the network of traffic-free routes such as the famous Taff Trail and the community route planned from Church Village to Llantrisant.

Treforest Connect2 will benefit the local community by providing the opportunity to travel actively on traffic-free paths to get to a wide range of local facilities. These include links from the spine of the Connect2 network to the town centres of Treforest and Pontypridd, the River Taff and various primary schools, playgrounds and green spaces along the way.

The scheme will also make it easy for students in Treforest to travel by foot and bike between the campuses of the University of Glamorgan.

Trevithick Connect2

Reviving the route of the world's first steam engine to run successfully on rails, the Trevithick Trail has recently been restored to create a walking and cycling path. The trail, follows the line of the historic tramway but is cut in two by heavy, fast moving traffic on the A4060 Mountain Hare road in Pentrebach.

Trevithick Connect2  will build an iconic, shared-use bridge over the busy dual-carriageway. It will complete a continuous route on the Trevithick Trail of traffic free route with rich industrial heritage.

Connect2 will also complete traffic-free and mainly flat connections between Merthyr Tydfil, Pentrebach and Troed-y-Rhiw residential areas that link local railway stations, a number of schools, shops, and workplaces on the way.

Once completed, Trevithick Connect2 will become part of the wider Taff Trail network.

Watton and Griston Link

Since the Second World War, the residents of Griston have lost their direct road link with the market town of Watton. As traffic levels have grown this loss has become more evident with the A1075 a less and less attractive option. Griston Parish Council has been leading efforts for a new walking and cycling route between the two communities and a route has been agreed along the edge of defence land to allow a new direct link away from traffic, and one which is very much shorter than the road alternative. For many ordinary, everyday journeys walking and cycling to Watton should now become the natural way to travel.

West Horndon to Brentwood, the A127 barrier

RESERVE SCHEME

There are 20 reserve schemes and it is intended that individual schemes will be called forward should any of the 79 schemes comprising the final Connect2 Project find they are unable to complete their programme.

West Horndon is completely cut off from the nearby Thorndon Country Park and Brentwood by the A127, a major dual carriageway. West Horndon is determined to overcome the Southern Arterial Road and drive a link through this barrier. Whilst not only vastly improving local journeys this could also potentially Connect2 the Mar Dyke and to the Thames beyond or the site of the 2012 Olympic mountain bike course just North of Brentwood.

Whitstable - Crab & Winkle Link over the mainline railway

The greenway and promenade along this 12 mile stretch of coast links numerous settlements. This Connect2 scheme focuses on delivering a number of key routes to the coast, including: the completion of the “Crab & Winkle Line” from Canterbury with two new bridges over the mainline railway and roads at Whitstable; a route to Chestfield & Swalecliffe Station; another to Herne Bay Station and, finally, a new bridge across the railway to St Nicholas at Wade, which in turn links to the existing Viking coastal trail around the Isle of Thanet.  Altogether, this is a marvellous opportunity for creating a wonderful local resource with the capacity to act as a catalyst for many more people walking and cycling for daily trips, as well as for visitors.

Kent County Council has published the consultation feedback for Whitstable, now available at:

"This is a great honour; I love the thought of becoming part of the landscape alongside Dick Wagstaff and the great Richard Burton. I'm hoping that my sculpture might be able to persuade Burton's sculpture to quote some poetry of an evening, or at least a bit of War of the Worlds." Rob Brydon
