The Sustrans’ Connect2 Salisbury scheme will be built on the south-east and north-west sides of Salisbury. It will consist of a combination of paths and crossings linking Alderbury and Wilton to Salisbury, including links from the railway station to Harnham, Lower Bemerton and Bemerton Heath. These new routes will enable everyday journeys for commuters and children travelling to the schools and colleges in these areas. The first parts of the scheme should be completed by Autumn 2011.
The most challenging part of the scheme will be the design of cycle tracks and crossings to enable cyclists to avoid using the busy A36 road at Wilton and Petersfinger. At Wilton the Highways Agency are currently designing a new path to run parallel to the A36. This is scheduled for construction in 2011.
This year’s Wilton Carnival took place on 3rd July with many local people getting involved in the events and a great overall turnout. On 15th July the designs for part of the new walking and cycling route will go on display at Grosvenor House, 26 Churchfields Road, Salisbury from 12pm - 8pm. Plans will be exhibited so that local people can learn more about the project and can give their views to members of the project team. The section of route to be displayed extends along Churchfields Road to the railway station and is part of a wider scheme from Wilton to Salisbury as part of the Sustrans project to create more vital transport links for local communities across the UK and provide new routes so that people can travel more short local journeys on foot or by bike.

A selection of comments received from the pledges:
"These links will make commuting and leisure journeys by bike between Salisbury and 2 outlying areas of population safer and more pleasant, avoiding dangerous main roads with fast intimidating traffic."
"These are crucial links which would greatly benefit a large number of cyclists & potential cyclists, in Salisbury & the surrounding areas."
"As Sustrans Liaison Ranger for the Salisbury area I will continue to work for the successful completion of links to Wilton and Alderbury from Salisbury. Thank you for including these projects on the Connect2 list."
“This is an essential project. The A36 is no place for a cyclist.”

"This is a great honour; I love the thought of becoming part of the landscape alongside Dick Wagstaff and the great Richard Burton. I'm hoping that my sculpture might be able to persuade Burton's sculpture to quote some poetry of an evening, or at least a bit of War of the Worlds." Rob Brydon
"Making it easy for millions of people to change their world by walking and cycling to the local places they want to go"
