Dumfries, Connecting 2 railway paths via the Nith Viaduct *NOW OPEN!*

A picturesque former railway viaduct spanning 170 metres across the River Nith has been transformed to become the very first Connect2 walking and cycling route, creating a direct link between communities in the east and north-west of the town.

More than 25,000 people live within a mile of the scheme and are now able to walk or cycle to school, to work or the town centre – to the benefit of both their health and the environment.

How will the local community benefit?

A selection of comments received since the route has been completed:

“The viaduct was the missing link. I feel so lucky having this on my doorstep; it has opened up the whole town to me. I used to have to get in my car to go to the supermarket, now I just head out with my dog.”

“I didn’t realise how much we were restricted by traffic in our daily lives until we had the path; its so much safer and much more relaxing.”

“Even my mum has got back on her bike since the path opened up!”

“This network is fantastic, it takes you everywhere you need to be; there are so many options from the fields out by Maxwell town station right into the centre, and so many place in-between!”

“You meet all kinds of people on the path, enjoying themselves or simply getting to work. There are parents teaching their kids how to ride a bike, dog walkers and groups from residential homes. What surprises me is there’s all this community activity, right on my doorstep & before the path, I just didn’t see it.”

A selection of comments received from the pledges running up to the TV vote in December 2007:

“This area has already done a lot for cycling and this link would be a great leap forward.”

“This would make a fine link between the NE and NW suburbs of Dumfries, linking residential, work and educational sites, especially since the opportunity for that at the installation of the bypass was lost.  Also, Dumfries would thereby start to look as though it had a network, not just radiating routes.”

"This is a great honour; I love the thought of becoming part of the landscape alongside Dick Wagstaff and the great Richard Burton. I'm hoping that my sculpture might be able to persuade Burton's sculpture to quote some poetry of an evening, or at least a bit of War of the Worlds." Rob Brydon
