Newport to Caerleon

Newport to Caerleon Although Caerleon is not far from Newport, the main road is circuitous and whilst Pillmawr Road appears a direct route, it is narrow, busy and extremely hilly. This proposal creates a level riverside route giving direct access from Malpas and central Newport to the university campus at Caerleon, the old hospital site, the remains of Isca Roman Legionary Fortress, the Celtic Manor Resort and Wentwood Forest beyond. This connection makes such a necessary link that it will change many people’s mental maps of their local area, especially once Newport has completed new developments at Crindau and a link to Shaftsbury Park that avoids the industrial area.

Casnewydd i Gaerllion - Er nad yw Caerllion yn bell o Gasnewydd, mae'r briffordd yn amgylchffordd a thra bod Heol Pilmawr yn ymddangos yn daith uniongyrchol, mae'n gul, yn brysur ac yn fryniog iawn. Mae'r cynnig hwn yn creu llwybr gwastad ar hyd glan yr afon sy'n rhoi mynediad uniongyrchol o Falpas a chanol Casnewydd i gampws y Brifysgol yng Nghaerllion, yr hen safle ysbyty, olion Caer Lleng Rufeinig Isca, Gwesty'r Celtic Manor a choedwig Gwynllyw y tu hwnt. Mae'r cyswllt hwn yn creu cyswllt mor angenrheidiol fel y bydd yn newid llawer o fapiau pen pobl am eu hardal leol, yn enwedig unwaith y bydd Casnewydd wedi cwblhau'r datblygiadau newydd yn Crindau a chyswllt i Barc Shaftesbury sy'n osgoi'r ardal ddiwydiannol.

How will the local community benefit?

Comments from the pledges:

"I was a keen cylist in London but I am too nervous to cycle from Caerleon to Newport where I work. This new route would enable me to do just that. Brilliant proposal. Also more children will be able to cycle from the Home Farm estate in Caerleon into the Comprehensive school."

"This would be a superb project to link the University sites and City Centre. It would also be very useful when Golf's Ryder Cup is held in Newport in 2010, in relation to helping relieving traffic congestion"

"I would love this to go ahead.  My son currently attends a fencing course at Caerleon College, and this would mean a much safer and easier way for him to travel there."

"I would love to cycle to work but am not fit enough to negiotate the current route which is very hilly.  It is also so narrow that is unsafe for both cyclist and driver - particularly as lorries use this route even though they are not supposed to! "

"My three children have wished to walk to Newport but I can't allow them as the lane is very dangerous for walkers"

“Rwy'n gweithio yng Nghasnewydd ac yn gorfod mynd i Gaerleon weithiau.  Byddai'n braf iawn cael gwneud hynny ar gefn beic.”

(I work in Newport and have to visit Carleon sometimes, it would be lovely to do this on the back of a bike)

"This is a great honour; I love the thought of becoming part of the landscape alongside Dick Wagstaff and the great Richard Burton. I'm hoping that my sculpture might be able to persuade Burton's sculpture to quote some poetry of an evening, or at least a bit of War of the Worlds." Rob Brydon
