Rhyl, bridge at Foryd Harbour, River Clwyd

The iconic Foryd Harbour pedestrian and cycle bridge has captured the imagination of many and when built, will span across the River Clwyd at Rhyl.  It will connect the communities of Rhyl and Kinmel Bay with a safe, direct route that will become the show piece for the network of walking and cycling paths that have been developed in this area over the last few years.
This scheme is a key part of the re-development work in the harbour area and will help to breathe new life into the local tourism economy, while enabling pedestrians and cyclists to make local, everyday journeys using safe, sustainable routes.
This bridge will provide a crossing for National Cycle Network Route 5 and will link the nearby counties and communities of Conwy and Denbighshire.  An improved connection will be made over the north Wales coast railway linking south Rhyl to the coast and the communities on the north side.
The Foryd Harbour bridge, developed in partnership with Denbighshire County Council and the Welsh Assembly Government, will provide a new alignment for NCN 5 which runs between Chester and Holyhead.  This vital missing link will connect two sections of traffic-free route and create an off-road section of the network that is over 15miles long.  The bridge will also be used as part of the All Wales Coast Path, which is currently being developed around the coast of Wales.
The improvements to the bridge across the North Wales coastal railway, in the vicinity of Westbourne Avenue, Rhyl, will link NCN 84 with NCN 5, NCN 84 and will pass down the Vale of Clwyd between St.Asaph and Rhyl.  There are also links to Rhuddlan and Bodelwyddan along the route

Rhyl’s walking and cycling bridge is on its way

Rhyl – Rhwng cymunedau'r Rhyl a Bae Cinmel yr unig gyswllt yw dros bont ffordd na ellir ei haddasu i ddarparu ar gyfer cerddwyr na beicwyr. Yr ateb yw pont newydd dros Afon Clwyd a fydd yn cysylltu'r llwybr arfordirol presennol i'r gorllewin o'r Rhyl. Tra'n darparu llwybr diogel a chynaliadwy ar gyfer teithiau pob dydd, bydd hefyd yn cynorthwyo I adfywio'r economi dwristaidd leol.

How will the local community benefit?

A selection of comments received from the pledges:

“This project will help to encourage more and more holiday makers along this coast to cycling.”

“Much needed improvement to this section of the coastal route. Safety will most definitely be better.”

"This project would fill a vital missing link in NCN route 5. The current bridge is narrow and busy and has signs for cyclists to dismount! Hardly what we want for a major route within the NCN"

"This is a great honour; I love the thought of becoming part of the landscape alongside Dick Wagstaff and the great Richard Burton. I'm hoping that my sculpture might be able to persuade Burton's sculpture to quote some poetry of an evening, or at least a bit of War of the Worlds." Rob Brydon
