Hastings and Bexhill coastal connections

Project photograph
Project photograph

The Glyne Gap is rightly named due to the low sea cliff severing the shingle beaches at Bexhill and Hastings. The way through for pedestrians and cyclists is circuitous and the main road unpleasant. This new coastal link, made possible due to new defence works, will finally connect the two towns with a magnificent seaside route.

The photograph shown was taken on Saturday 8th September when over 300 people turned out to show their support for the Hastings-Bexhill Coastal Connection. The red and white flags mark out a section of the proposed route.

How will the local community benefit?

A selection of comments received from the pledges:

"An arthritic cyclist (78) would love to use this link."

"Hi. This sounds like a great idea. As well as giving easier bike access to the skate ramp on Galley Hill from Hastings, it would be great to remove the "dangerous bit" from the otherwise pleasant ride from Hastings to Eastbourne. Thanks, Ian."

“I strongly support this initiative.  It will open up an attractive cycle route without impinging on other people.  It will encourage me to cycle to work, because I will be able to avoid the heavy traffic on the Bexhill road and will give me great opportunities for exercise and visiting the bright lights of Hastings at the weekend.  Money well spent, bring it on!”

“I used to cycle all over London, until two bad accidents lost me my nerve. I'd love to get back to it, and a safe cycle route along the sea to Bexhill sounds just the ticket: maybe one day I'll even leave my car at home.”

"This is a great honour; I love the thought of becoming part of the landscape alongside Dick Wagstaff and the great Richard Burton. I'm hoping that my sculpture might be able to persuade Burton's sculpture to quote some poetry of an evening, or at least a bit of War of the Worlds." Rob Brydon
