Worcester scheme - latest link completed

Work on an important walking and cycling link in Worcester is now complete, making it easier for local people to get around.

Work started on 9th Nov 2009 and was completed on 18 Dec 2009. The works consisted of widening the existing footpath between Barneshall Avenue and St Mark's Close, to 3.0m wide, creating a new footpath section and providing new lighting, bollards, handrails, anti-slip surfacing and road markings.

The footpath forms part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network Route 45 and regional route 44, which will link to the new pedestrian and cycle bridge at Diglis.

This latest link in the Worcester Connect2 project is funded through Sustrans’ Connect2 Big Lottery Fund award, from which the County Council secured £850k of funding for the new Diglis bridge and supporting routes.

Henry Harbord - Sustrans Area Manager for West Midlands said, "Worcestor is really leading the way with this scheme - the new Diglis bridge will be the centre piece of the route but delivering dozen's of new or improved links like this one at Barneshall Avenue will make such a huge difference to how people get about in Worcestor. Creating safer more usable pathways like this to help local people make everyday journeys by foot or by bike is exactly what Sustrans work is all about and Worcestor is really achieving that."

Cllr Derek Prodger MBE, The County Council's Cabinet Member for Transport and Safe Environment, said “These works are essential to provide greater accessibility for walkers and cyclists, and so help reduce traffic congestion within the city and providing residents with safe and sustainable travel choices. I am pleased that the work is complete, delivering the connecting walk-cycle links that local people voted for. The new Diglis bridge and additional links will increase freedom of movement around Worcester and will improve our quality of lives through cost savings, reduced congestion and improved health."

"This is a great honour; I love the thought of becoming part of the landscape alongside Dick Wagstaff and the great Richard Burton. I'm hoping that my sculpture might be able to persuade Burton's sculpture to quote some poetry of an evening, or at least a bit of War of the Worlds." Rob Brydon
