Southampton Boardwalk planning application has been granted

The million pound Sustrans’ Connect2 scheme to transform the Itchen waterfront has been unanimously approved by councillors.

The elevated riverside walk will be built along a kilometre stretch of the west bank of the River Itchen between Horseshoe Bridge and Northman Bridge.

Work will begin in June and the walkway should be completed by October.

The boadwalk will have views of the estuary into Southampton Water as well being a pleasant and tranquil access route to the city centre. It will eventually join a cycle route across Cobben Bridge and on as far as riverside Park. It will be a vital link for people to get around under their own steam for daily journeys, and football fans will be able to walk directly along the new path from St Denys rail station to St Mary’s stadium.

Nick Farthing, Sustrans’ area manager who is  working directly on the scheme hailed it “a great decision” for a community based project.

"This is a great honour; I love the thought of becoming part of the landscape alongside Dick Wagstaff and the great Richard Burton. I'm hoping that my sculpture might be able to persuade Burton's sculpture to quote some poetry of an evening, or at least a bit of War of the Worlds." Rob Brydon
