New Diglis Bridge unveiled

In April this year, Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, and Social Development Minister, Margaret Ritchie, unveiled the designs for Derry ~ Londonderry’s new Peace Bridge which will run from former military base, Ebrington to the rear of the Guildhall. This is the third bridge across the River Foyle, the “Peace Bridge” (as it will be hidden) has received over 13 million speaking the River Foyle from the European Union’s PEACE III Programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). The programme’s theme of Creating Shared Public Space aims to support large scale infrastructure developments that will tackle problems of separated communities by creating genuine new shared space or transforming existing space. The programme is well under way with which it’s due to start in September 2009 and to be completed by late 2010.

Henry Harbord, Area Manager at Sustrans, said: "It's really exciting to see such a wonderfully designed bridge coming to join the two halves of the city, and one that will give people the ability to get around on foot or on bike for everyday journeys. It's a great centrepiece for the entire Sustrans' Connect2 project and once in place it will open up the riverside for everyone who lives and works in the city."

"This is a great honour; I love the thought of becoming part of the landscape alongside Dick Wagstaff and the great Richard Burton. I'm hoping that my sculpture might be able to persuade Burton's sculpture to quote some poetry of an evening, or at least a bit of War of the Worlds." Rob Brydon
