Local residents in Northwich given the opportunity to see plans for the new Riversdale Swing Bridge

Local residents in Northwich were given the opportunity to see the plans for the new Riversdale Swing Bridge, which were displayed for public viewing last week, at the local Salt Museum.

Sustrans’ Connect2 project aims to reinstate the popular bridge, creating a safe and attractive route for pedestrians and cyclists over the River Weaver.

Following the display, Cheshire West and Chester Council intends to prepare and submit a planning application.  The walking and cycling route will cost around £1.5 million funded by the Big Lottery Fund through Sustrans’ Connect2 and Cheshire West and Chester Council. It is anticipated that the bridge will open by August 2010.

Herbert Manley, Cheshire West and Chester Council Prosperity Executive Member Councillor says “Until its closure, up to 1,000 people crossed the Riversdale footbridge daily, using it particularly to reach local schools and colleges.  The new bridge will link to riverside towpaths, the town centre, railway stations and other local facilities.  And further afield the footpaths and cycle paths in Northwich will link to the Weaver Way, one of the flagship projects in the Weaver Valley.”

Sustrans ‘ Connect2 is funded by a £50 million Big Lottery Fund grant after the UK public voted the scheme the winner of The People’s Millions Lottery contest in December 2007.

"This is a great honour; I love the thought of becoming part of the landscape alongside Dick Wagstaff and the great Richard Burton. I'm hoping that my sculpture might be able to persuade Burton's sculpture to quote some poetry of an evening, or at least a bit of War of the Worlds." Rob Brydon
