Greenfields ‘greenways’ open day, Shrewsbury
The event, organised by Shropshire Council’s Cycle Shrewsbury team, will celebrate the completion of the first phase of Shrewsbury's 'Connect2' project. From 3pm to 5pm, there will be opportunities to take part in a quiz (on foot or by bike) using the newly surfaced paths. There will also be refreshments, a prize draw, and opportunities to make a pedal-powered smoothie and get a free cycle check-up with Dr Bike at the Greenfields Bowling Club. The paths around the Greenfields Recreation Ground have been widened and surfaced, and new lighting, seating and trees have been added.
The project has been made possible by the enormous popular support for Sustrans' Connect2 - funded by a £50million Big Lottery Fund grant after the UK public voted the scheme the winner of the People's Millions Lottery contest in December 2007.The work has also been funded by Shropshire Council, Shrewsbury Town Council, and the Department for Transport (Cycle Shrewsbury). The paths were constructed by the council’s contractors, Enterprise and designed by their consultants, Mouchel.
Martin Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for strategic planning and transport, said: “These paths provide much needed pedestrian and cycling facilities, linking the North of the town to the town centre.
“We hope that that more and more people will now be able to use this attractive and convenient route when travelling into town, to school or just to the nearby shops.”
Beverley Baker, Shropshire Councillor for Bagley, added: “Having live in Greenfields for some time I am happy to see the improvements made to our green area.
“It’s thanks to the commitment of councillors, Roger Evans and Max Winchester that these pathways were improved and safe connections, away from the busy road, were made between Greenfields and the school. The new pathways will improve safety for cyclists and walkers alike.”
