Glasgow takes a step closer to a bridge to somewhere

The Sustrans' Connect2 Glasgow project takes a step closer this week as the Memorandum of Understanding paperwork is signed by Sustrans and its Connect2 partners at Glasgow City Council, together with Transport Scotland.

At the moment the nearest point for crossing the M8 is the underpass, which is unattractive and noisy. Completing the proposed bridge would encourage people to travel across the M8 to Central Station and further on foot and by bike, and make it easy for people to live more active and less carbon emitting lifestyles.

The signing of this paperwork, will guide the development of the scheme for the coming years and confirms partners continued commitment to the project and pledges £950 000 from Sustrans’ Connect2 lottery award to build the bridge.

Sustrans’ Scotland Director John Lauder said: “Once completed, this traffic-free bridge is going to be a real asset to the local community, enabling more people to get around the city in ways which are good for their health and that of the environment.”

Bailie James McNally said: “The tremendous enthusiasm we have seen for this project in the communities separated by the motorway shows that people are prepared to walk and cycle given the right environment. Like them, I am looking forward to completing this connection; 40 years after work on the bridge began.”

"This is a great honour; I love the thought of becoming part of the landscape alongside Dick Wagstaff and the great Richard Burton. I'm hoping that my sculpture might be able to persuade Burton's sculpture to quote some poetry of an evening, or at least a bit of War of the Worlds." Rob Brydon
