Disused railway bridge to be given new life in Borough-wide walking and cycling network
Today, plans to upgrade an existing and currently disused railway bridge over Rotherhithe New Road and create a walking and cycling greenway east to west through Bermondsey are a step closer as sustainable transport charity Sustrans and its Connect2 partners at the London Borough of Bermondsey sign the paperwork that will guide the development for the coming years.
This agreement, a Memorandum of Understanding, confirms partners’ continued commitment to the project and pledges £600,000 from Sustrans’ Connect2 lottery award to complete the network. This walking and cycling initiative will create a convenient shortcut to South Bermondsey train station, realising a long-term aspiration for the local community to see the bridge – currently overgrown and in a state of disrepair – given a new a new lease of life. Once open, this bridge will create a traffic free alternative to crossing the busy Rotherhithe New Road for hundreds of journeys each day.A feasibility study is currently underway and, once completed this summer, will identify what works will happen and when. It is anticipated that the entire route will be open in 2013 and when finished will provide a continuous route linking the bridge into a new walking and cycling greenway through Burgess Park, Bermondsey onto the Rotherhithe peninsular via the north of the borough. It will form additional useful links to the existing Thames Cycle Network and local routes to Lewisham and Peckham.
