Cutting of the First Sod at Diglis Bridge, Worcester

The cutting of the first sod took place last week at the Diglis Bridge site in Worcester.  The occasion marked the start of construction on the new walking and cycling bridge which will be constructed just south of Diglis Island, linking the Weir Lane footpath with Navigation Road and the Severn Way footpath. The bridge and surrounding links will create many leisure and commuting opportunities and make travelling across Worcester City on foot or bike, a more pleasant experience.

£850,000 of Lottery funding  was awarded towards the cost of the new bridge. Many new walking and cycling links have already been created in preparation for the completion of the new bridge, scheduled for opening in July 2010.

Cllr Derek Prodger MBE, The County Council's Cabinet Member for Transport and Safe Environment, said “We are delighted that work will now commence on the new Diglis walk and cycle bridge. This will provide greater accessibility for walkers and cyclists, and so help reduce traffic congestion within the city and providing residents with safe and sustainable travel choices. The new Diglis bridge and additional links will increase freedom of movement around Worcester and will improve our quality of lives through cost savings, reduced congestion and improved health.”

"This is a great honour; I love the thought of becoming part of the landscape alongside Dick Wagstaff and the great Richard Burton. I'm hoping that my sculpture might be able to persuade Burton's sculpture to quote some poetry of an evening, or at least a bit of War of the Worlds." Rob Brydon
