In June 2005 the Big Lottery Fund and ITV announced a competition to find the winner of a £50 million National Lottery grant. The search was on for a groundbreaking project that would inspire communities to revitalise the areas where they live.
There were 33 entries to the competition. The Big Lottery Fund assessed the bids, identified a long list of 13 projects and in August 2006 awarded six projects, including Sustrans' Connect2, development grants to take their plans forward to the next stage. In October 2007 the Big Lottery Fund decided just four projects ( Sustrans’ Connect2, Eden Project: The Edge, Sherwood: The Living Legend and Black Country as Urban Park) would go through to the final.
The four shortlisted projects were put forward to the public vote, which was carried out online and by telephone following a television programme about each project on ITV1. On Wednesday 12 December Sustrans’ Connect2 was announced as the winner, taking 42% of the votes and winning the £50 million prize.

"I'm delighted that we won the £50 million and really proud to hear that the first completed project is in Scotland. Well done to Sustrans and their partners for giving people a great cycling and walking network and for bringing a local landmark back to life." Lorraine Kelly
